This is the piece I made for an Asian American anthology named Legacies! This painting is about how I got my Korean name when I was really really little. I was jealous of the other Korean kids at school that had Korean names, and I ended up asking my mom why I didn't have one. She said I didn't need one because I was American. This depicts the moment my mom and I chose my name together when I was around 7, and it is a very precious memory for me. Growing up, I was told by many of my peers that I wasn't Korean enough because of how I looked and because I wasn't fluent, and this helped me feel a little more validated when I was younger! Although to be honest when I got older and realized how silly naming myself 별(star) was; I started to hate it. Looking back now though, I'm glad it happened. And even if it's silly, I still cherish this memory a lot.
